Introduction
A state with the highest number of man-made lakes, Oklahoma was initially established as an Indian Territory until 1889, when the land rush began!
Many settlers were allowed to stake claim to land on the first day of settlement, while cheaters who tried to beat the strict start time were known as Sooners. Therefore, the country's nickname today is The Sooner State!
Regarding its name, though, Oklahoma is a blend of two Choctaw words: okla(people) and humma(red).
The first people arrived in the land of today's Oklahoma approximately 30,000 years ago, followed by numerous Native American tribes, such as Apache, Comanche, Kiowa, Wichita, and others, thousands of years later.
Though Spanish and French traders and explorers controlled some parts of the land during the 1700s, Napoleon sold it to the US at the beginning of the 1800s.
In the 1830s, many Native Americans relocated to what was then known as Indian Territory. In the 1890s, part of the Indian Territory became Oklahoma Territory, while 17 years later, the Indian and Oklahoma territories were combined again to become Oklahoma state.
Nowadays, more than 30 tribes' members live in Oklahoma, representing the largest Native American population with around 250,000, so…
…it comes as no surprise the state is known as the home of tribal gaming, boasting an impressive number of tribal casinos!
The Oklahoma tribes have struggled to improve their economic status for many years, but the financial picture has dramatically changed since voters approved casino gambling in 2004, and the tribes received an exclusive concession.
Besides, Oklahoma is fourth in the US in terms of the overall number of casino venues, with over one hundred casinos!
Several of them are complete resorts featuring not only casinos but also hotels, pools, golf courses, and dining restaurants! These casinos offer many varieties of slot machines, blackjack, roulette, poker, off-track betting, and card tournaments!
One of Oklahoma's largest casino venues, Winstar World Casino, has more than 600,000 square feet of gaming space, making it the world's largest casino.
Besides the tribal casinos, there are other popular legal forms of gambling, including bingo, state lottery, and more.

History of Gambling in Oklahoma
From 1916 to 1983, all forms of gambling were banned in Oklahoma when the state lawmakers passed the Horse and Racing Bill, allowing gamblers to participate in parimutuel betting at racetracks.
An even more essential and widely recognizable act (at least across the US) was passed in 1988, allowing Native American tribes to negotiate casino compacts with the state. The act is known as the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act (IGRA).
This law has resulted in Oklahoma having the largest tribal casino industry in the country.
Another significant milestone was the State-Tribal Gaming Act of 2004, which included a Model Tribal Gaming Compact.
If Indian tribes agree to the compact, they can offer electronic bingo games of all types, including electronic instant bingo and electronic amusement games. The model compact also authorizes poker and certain kinds of blackjack, in which players compete against each other, and the house shares the profits.
Oklahoma approved a state lottery the next year, while the Daily Fantasy Sports Bill was introduced in 2017. In the following year, HB3375 was signed into law by Governor Fallin. The bill legalized craps, roulette, and pooled sports betting at Indian casinos.

For players 18 years old and older (in some cases at least 21), there is a fantastic number of legal tribal brick-and-mortar venues throughout Oklahoma, offering games like slot machines, roulette, poker, blackjack, craps, and keno.
Native American gambling has become more important to Oklahoma's economy since tribes have exclusive rights to open casinos. According to the American Gaming Agency, these casinos have around $12 billion in economic impact while creating about 90,000 jobs.
Moreover, a report from the end of 2023 states that the Oklahoma City region saw the second-highest revenue increase worth over $66 million compared to seven other areas listed.
What about the legalization of sports betting?
Among many attempts to make sports betting a reality in the state, the two most recent happened in 2022 and 2023.
Needless to say, they both failed to pass before the deadline. Still, Governor Kevin Stitt believes in his plan to allow Oklahomans to place in-person bets at gaming sites operated by federally recognized tribes and protect tribal investments in brick-and-mortar facilities.

What Legal Gambling Options in Oklahoma Are Available Now?
As already mentioned, sports betting and online gambling still remain illegal in the state of Oklahoma, although Sen. Casey Murdock continues to introduce sports betting bills, the last one being presented at the beginning of 2024.
This means that if a resident wants to place a bet on any kind of sport, they can only do it via unlicensed offshore casinos that do not have consumer protections through US laws.
Regarding legal options...
...people are allowed to play the lottery and several bingo-type games, as well as be involved in charitable betting, daily fantasy sports, horse race betting, and raffle prizes!
