Introduction

Philadelphia Phillies Hire Former Yankees Manager and Catcher Joe Girardi to Manage Ball Club

On Thursday, October 24th, 2019 the Philadelphia Phillies announced that they made the decision to hire Joe Girardi as the next manager of their ball club. Although nothing is official just yet, the details as well as the press conference to introduce him as their manager should be coming soon.

Girardi has a lot of Major League Baseball experience as a player and a manager throughout his professional baseball career. He was also very successful in both of those roles, and it was only a matter of time until he was given another opportunity to coach in the big leagues once again. The Phillies were the organization providing the Illinois native that opportunity. Recently Joe has been in the broadcasting booth calling ball games, but he will gladly put his career as a baseball analyst on hold while he manages the Philadelphia team starting in 2020.

Girardi was interviewed by the Chicago Cubs and the New York Mets to fill their vacant managerial positions, but the Cubs hired David Ross to manage in Chicago. The Mets are still working on hiring their next manager. Girardi was one of several candidates considered by the Philadelphia Phillies others included Dusty Baker and Buck Showalter who both have extensive experience managing in the MLB.

Coaching and Managerial Experience

As Girardi’s days as a Major League Baseball player came to an end in 2003, it did not take long for him to find a way to stay involved in the game that he loves. In 2004 he was a broadcaster for the YES Network. By 2005 he signed on as the bench coach of the New York Yankees /online-gambling/sports-betting/busted-up-in-the-bronx-2019-new-york-yankees-continue-to-suffer-injuries-to-big-name-players under the highly successful Joe Torre who was the manager of the Yankees at that time and had managed Girardi when he played for the Yankees.

By 2006 the Florida Marlins hired Girardi to manage their ball club replacing their former manager, Jack McKeon. Girardi did a fabulous job leading that team to a record of 78-84 and contended for a wild card spot in the 2006 MLB postseason. He was able to accomplish this level of success with very little resources as the Florida Marlins had the lowest payroll in the majors at that time. He won the National League Manager of the Year Award in 2006 for his immediate impact and for turning around a struggling franchise. Despite these accomplishments Girardi got into fights with the owner of the Florida Marlins, Jeffrey Loria, and he was fired as their manager after only one season.

Girardi got his second chance to manage as the Yankees and Joe Torre went their separate ways following the 2007 MLB season. He managed the team from 2008 to 2017. He won the World Series with them as a manger in 2009. He did a fabulous job as the head coach of the historic NY team franchise, but in 2017 his contract expired and the team decided not to extend his contract as they brought in Aaron Boone to take his place. Boone is currently still their man in New York for now.

The Future of the Philadelphia Phillies

The Phillies have a very bright future in the landscape of Major League Baseball. Girardi is a great manager who wins challenges, makes smart decisions, and gets his players to work hard and perform to their potential. They have a solid roster of players that include the superstar outfielder, Bryce Harper. If the Phillies can stay healthy, they should be contending for a pennant every year in the near future.
