Red Rake Gaming

Introduction

Red Rake Gaming is an online casino game developers that has been in operation since 2011. The group is unique in that they started out as a social game developer, where they didn’t actually provide real money games to customers. Things changed for the company in 2015, when they decided to make the switch to real money casino games. The real money endeavor went live in 2016, and today the company now has more than 40 employees, 200 casino partners, and several platforms.

Based out of Spain, Red Rake has done a lot of work to become established in various jurisdictions that sanction online betting. Thus far, Red Rake holds licenses in Spain, the United Kingdom, Italy, Sweden, Germany, and Portugal. It’s likely that we’ll see some expansion continuing from the developer, especially throughout Europe as liberalization continues.

Red Rake is a strange brand of software. They offer only four types of games — blackjack, slots, video poker, and video bingo. I have to give them a lot of credit for offering video bingo, as that is very popular in Latin America and I know of no other software brands to offer it. The online gambling business tends to be about ten years behind the times when it comes to game selection, so it is nice to see somebody do something new as opposed to just copying each other.

The graphics and sound on everything are well done. While art may be their strong suit, mathematics is not. For example, they offer a blackjack game with a house edge of 4.21%, which is just insulting. However, they make up for it with a video poker game with an average player advantage of 0.43% and as high as 0.80%. I recommend playing that game while you still can.

It is strange that they offer no poker-based table games like Three Card Poker, but perhaps those are coming.

Red Rake slots are pleasant and soothing to play. They kindly disclose the theoretical return percentage on most of them. Here are some I recorded:

  • Asp of Cleopatra — 95.3%
  • Montecarlo Glamour — 95.5%
  • Myrtle the Witch — 95.0%
  • Viva Las Vegas — 95.2%
  • Mystic Mirror — 95.2%
  • Eastern Goddesses — 96.0%

You can play lots of Red Rake slots for free through their web site.

The quality of the slot selection is decent in terms of presentation. Visuals are relayed in high definition, and can be quite dazzling depending on the title. Red Rake deploys their games in HTML5 format, which is less burdensome than Flash when it comes to using resources. The end result is a compatibility with more computer systems, and the games can also be played on mobile devices.

Red Rake is to be applauded for nine video poker games with returns over 99%. However, the return gets as low as 97.05% (on Five Aces), so be careful which game you choose.

The big news, which I won't scream too loudly, is that they have a game I've never seen before called Number Bonus, with an average return of 100.43%. The return actually ranges from 100.26% to 100.80%, depending on the "Bonus Number." 100.43% is just an average of the return for the nine possible Bonus Numbers. Click the link I just gave for the details. Sorry, you're on your own when it comes to a strategy. Also, be sure the pay table you see matches the 1-2-3-3-2-5-4-5-6-10-12-20-40-80-600 pay table my analysis is based on. Eventually, they are going to have to depress the pay table, after they either get killed on the game or read this.

Much like video poker, the returns for the various blackjack games are all over the place. The house edge ranges from a low of 0.41% on the "Atlantic City" game to a high of 4.21% on the Fast game.

"How do you even have a blackjack game with a house edge that high?", you might ask. You do it by not allowing doubling or splitting at all. These are the awful rules you see on some bar-top games in Vegas. Another strange thing about this game is it says you can play up to 12 hands, but I could only play 9 when making a max bet.

Double Exposure

double_exposure.png.jpg
Double Exposure

Following are the rules to Red Rake's double exposure game:

  • Six decks.
  • Dealer stands on soft 17.
  • Winning blackjack pays 1-1.
  • Dealer wins on ties, except a blackjack tie is a push.
  • Double on hard 9 to 11 only.
  • Double after split not allowed.
  • Split once only.

Under these rules, I get a house edge of 1.19%.

Blackjack Switch

blackjack_switch.png.jpg
Blackjack Switch

Blackjack Switch seems to follow the usual rules, except the dealer stands on a soft 17 and the dealer does not peek for blackjack. Here are the details:

  • Decks: 6
  • Dealer stands on soft 17
  • A 22 is a push against any and except for a Blackjack.
  • Dealer does not peek for blackjack
  • Blackjack pays 1-1
  • Double any two cards
  • Doubling down after splitting allowed.

This results in a house edge of about 0.38%.

Red Rake offers four roulette games. Three of them are on a single-zero wheel, for a house edge of 2.70%. I recommend avoiding American Roulette, on a double-zero wheel, which has a house edge of at least 5.26% on all bets. Every wheel has a nice interface and provide statistics on previous spins for superstitious players.

Frenzy Discs

Frenzy Disks are two roulette variations. Both involve two concentric roulette wheels. In Twin Disks, each wheel has 10 slots and one balls. In 16 Balls, each wheel has 25 slots and 8 balls. Please click on either link for all the rules and analysis.
