The Kansas City Chiefs defeated the Philadelphia Eagles 38 to 35 in Super Bowl LVII
Introduction
On Sunday, February 12th, 2023 the Super Bowl LVII MVP, Patrick Mahomes, and the Kansas City Chiefs came from behind late in the game to defeat the Philadelphia Eagles 38 to 35 in Super Bowl LVII. This victory gives the Kansas City Chiefs as well as their head coach, Andy Reid, and Mahomes their second Super Bowl championship over the course of the past 4 - years.
The Award - Winning Performance of Patrick Mahomes
The Super Bowl LVII MVP in Mahomes was only magical but he was as clutch as could be when his team needed him to be. When the Kansas City Chiefs frantically needed him to pull off another Super Bowl comeback Patrick was at his best once again.
Playing on an injured and weak ankle, Patrick threw 2 - touchdown receptions during the 4th - quarter as well as scrambling for 26 - yards on the go - ahead - drive prior to Harrison Butker kicking the game - winning 27 - yard field goal with only 8 - seconds remaining in the game to give the Chiefs a 38 to 35 win over the Philadelphia Eagles on last Sunday night.
The Kansas City Chiefs cam out victorious in their 2nd - NFL Super Bowl championship title in just 4 - years’ time, and earning Mahomes his 2nd - NFL MVP for the 2022 - 2023 NFL regular season as well as his 2nd - Super Bowl MVP Award.
“I thought guys just embraced the moment,” the Kansas City Chiefs quarterback, Patrick Mahomes, proclaimed regarding the Chiefs’ rally to come back from a 10 - point halftime deficit. “In that first half, we were playing and doing some good stuff, but I felt like the guys were getting consumed by everything around us.”
Mahomes and Jalen Hurts both outshined the expectations of most in the first Super Bowl match - up that featured 2 - Black starting quarterbacks, but Patrick really excelled during the 2nd - half of this year’s Super Bowl ever after he reaggravated his right high - ankle sprain throughout the NFL postseason.
“It took everybody to win the game,” Mahomes goes on to say.
Andy Reid
The Kansas City Chiefs head coach, Andy Reid, who was unable to win a Super Bowl in Philadelphia when he was the head coach of the Eagles, beat his former NFL franchise to earn his second NFL Super Bowl ring with Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs.
“We wanted to get this so bad for him,” the Kansas City Chiefs tight end, Travis Kelce, explained. “His legacy in Philly lives on forever. ... There’s a lot of pride in knowing that he’s had success in two different organizations, but this was the better one.”
The Decisive and Exciting End to Super Bowl LVII
With Super Bowl LVII tied up with a score of 35 to 35, the Philadelphia Eagles attempted to allow the Kansas City Chiefs to score a touchdown with just under 2 - minutes remaining in game time in order to get the ball back before the end of regulation, but due to a defensive holding penalty call on cornerback, James Bradberry, on a 3rd - and - 8 which provided the Kansas City Chiefs a much - needed game - winning 1st - down, Jerick McKinnon slid at the 2 - yard - line which forced the Philadelphia Eagles to use their final timeout of the contest, and that set up the winning field goal by Butker.
“It was holding. I tugged his jersey. I was hoping they would let it slide,” the Philadelphia Eagles cornerback, James Bradberry, expressed.
After Mahomes took a knee 2 - times, Harrison nailed his game - winning field goal kick that sent thousands of the red - clothed Kansas City Chiefs fans into one hell of a celebration frenzy at that point.
“It feels amazing just to see the confetti,” the Kansas City Chiefs place kicker, Harrison Butker, stated. “I just tried to focus on one kick and focusing on the process.”
The Super Bowl Champion Kansas City Chiefs (Dynasty?)
The Kansas City Chiefs won their 2nd - Super Bowl championship title since the 2019 - 2020 NFL season coming 50 - years after their very 1st - one ever. Patrick Mahomes led them back from a 10 - point deficit during the 4th - quarter vs. the San Francisco 49ers in their most recent Super Bowl Championship until just last weekend when they once again held up the Lombardi Trophy in victorious fashion.
Mahomes, who just so happened to endure a right high - ankle sprain during the divisional round of the 2022 - 2023 NFL playoffs, reinjured it once again on a 3 - yard scramble late in the 2nd - quarter of the game, and in fact he had to limp off of the field as the Kansas City Chiefs fans held their breath only for him to show no ill effects on following Kansas City Chiefs’ offensive possession.
“I knew it was pretty bad when he got up limping but I knew it wasn’t gonna be bad enough to where he was gonna pull himself off the field,” said the Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator, Eric Bieniemy. “If we would’ve pulled him off, I would’ve had to fight him. He would’ve probably fought me. And so, it wasn’t worth entertaining.”
Mahomes managed to slip on the turf of the gridiron, as well as several other players losing their footing on that natural grass surface in the pocket, yet somehow Patrick regained his balance and scrambled for an additional 14 - yards to the Philadelphia Eagles 4 - yard - line, setting up Isiah Pacheco’s 1 - yard touchdown rush that cut the Philadelphia Eagles lead to 24 to 21.
Patrick then threw a 5 - yard touchdown reception to his wide - open receiver in Kadarius Toney in order to give the Kansas City Chiefs their first lead at 28 to 27, early on during the 4th – quarter oof Super Bowl LVII.
After the Kansas City Chiefs pulled together their defense that forced the Philadelphia Eagles to punt, Toney miraculously returned a line - drive punt back which was good for 65 - yards all the way to the Philadelphia Eagles 5 - yard - line for the longest punt - return in the history of all Super Bowls.
On a 3rd - down from the Philadelphia Eagles 4 - yard - line, Mahomes found Skyy Moore on another touchdown in order to extend the Kansas City Chiefs’ lead to 35 - 27. Moore was so wide open on that play that it was ridiculous. You can chalk up that offensive brilliance to both Mahomes and his head coach Andy Reid. Then the rest of the game from there on out was history.
