According to sources close to the Cincinnati Reds camp the Reds veteran superstar first - baseman, Joey Votto, will apparently have to begin the 2023 Major League Baseball season on the injured list which just so happens to snap his previous streak of 14 - straight MLB seasons starting for the Cincinnati Reds on Opening Day.

AAA Assignment for Joey Votto

Joey explained via a major sports media news conference on Monday, March 27th, 2023 that he will have to start the 2023 baseball season with the Cincinnati Reds Triple - A club on a rehabilitation assignment later on this week, and that he will rejoin the Cincinnati Reds big - league club when he is good and ready.

Surgery

The now 39 - year - old first - baseman for the Cincinnati Reds had to undergo surgery on his left rotator cuff (shoulder) late last August of 2022, and Votto is still working his way back to 100 % as a starting MLB ball player.

"What led me to that decision was just not being ready," the Cincinnati Reds star first baseman Joey Votto expressed to the Cincinnati Enquirer. "Starting a good bit behind during spring training. Still working through some of the rehab process. Not accumulating enough time in the field.

"Not accumulating enough at - bats. [Sunday] was the first day where I felt semi - close to being able to play close to 100 %. It takes a stretch of time feeling that way before you feel like you are regular - season ready."
