How to Make Spanish Letters in Microsoft Word

Let me pause the story and go over how to make Spanish letters in Microsoft word. I am mainly writing this for my own benefit, hoping that if I do the method will sink in deep enough to remember when I write part 5. However, before I get to that, I present the usual weekly logic puzzle.

Logic Puzzle

How to Make Spanish Letters in Microsoft Word

To put an accent mark above a letter do as follows:

  1. Hold down the Ctrl and apostrophe keys at the same. You may press them in either order or at the same time. The important thing is they are both depressed at the same time.
  2. Release both keys at the same time.
  3. Type the letter you want under the accent mark.

Let me see if it worked: á, é, ó. Yay!

To make the letter ñ do as follows:

  1. Hold down the Ctrl and tilde keys at the same. Note that to make the ~ symbol you will need to press the shirt key as well. So, you’ll need to hold down three keys at the same time.
  2. Release all three keys at the same time.
  3. Type the letter n.

Let’s test it: otoño.

For the seldom used umlaut follow the same process for a tilde, except type a colon instead of a tilde.

Let’s test it: vergüenza.

Trivia time! Can you name four heavy metal bands from the 1980’s that have an umlaut in their name? Spinal Tap does not count. Note that Spinal Tap has an uplaut above the n, but this method doesn’t work for an n, as it’s evidently not a legitimate letter in any language. Answer at the end of the newsletter.

How about an upside down question mark. Here you have to hold down the control, alt and question mark at the same time. Note that to make the question mark you have to hold down the shift button, so you have to hold down four keys at the same time. Unlike with the diacritical accent marks, there is no second step. Just hold down four keys at once and release them.

Let’s test it: ¿Done esta el baño?

The upside down exclamation point is the same thing, except make an exclamation point instead of a question mark.

Let’s test it: ¡Cuidado – piso mojado!

Trivia Answer:

  1. Blue Öyster Cult
  2. Motörhead
  3. Mötley Crüe
  4. Queensrÿche
