Ask The Wizard #435

We use your Dragon Tiger analysis to check our calculations and noticed several rule details that may need updating:

  1. Pragmatic Play’s game-help document lists Odd as A, 3, 5, 9, J, and K, and Even as 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, and Q. A 7 therefore loses both bets, rather than an ace. The house edge remains 7.69%. The document also specifies eight decks, an 11-to-1 Tie payout, and a 50-round limit on the applicable side bets.
  2. SA Gaming lists Big/Small, Odd/Even, and Red/Black side bets, with Tie paying 8 to 1.
  3. Deltin’s Goa casinos describe six- to eight-deck games, return half of Dragon/Tiger wagers on a tie, and pay 10 to 1 on the Tie bet. With six decks, I calculate an 18.65% house edge on that Tie bet.
  4. One rule refers to the “Dragon and Player” hands rather than “Dragon and Tiger.”

Can you check these details and clarify which rules depend on the provider?

Logan

Thank you for including the rule sources. We checked the points you raised and the associated mathematics, and updated the Dragon Tiger article.

  • Pragmatic Play Odd/Even: Odd wins on A, 3, 5, 9, J, and K; Even wins on 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, and Q; and a 7 loses both bets. The house edge remains 1/13, or about 7.69%.
  • Other Pragmatic Play rules: The article now specifies eight decks, the 11-to-1 Tie payout, and the 50-round limit on the applicable side bets.
  • SA Gaming: We updated its Big/Small, Odd/Even, and Red/Black offerings and their payouts, along with its 8-to-1 Tie payout.
  • Deltin: We added the six- to eight-deck rules, the half-return treatment of tied Dragon/Tiger wagers, and the 10-to-1 Tie payout. At six decks, that Tie bet has a house edge of 58/311 = 18.6495%, or about 18.65%. At eight decks, the corresponding house edge is about 17.83%.
  • Typographical correction: “Dragon and Player” has been changed to “Dragon and Tiger.”

The revised article distinguishes the providers’ rules and payouts. In particular, the Tie analysis separates the eight-deck figures from Deltin’s six-deck example, and the Odd/Even section explains the Pragmatic Play and SA Gaming versions separately.

We also clarified several related passages so the rules, strategy, and analysis are consistent with the versions being described.
