Introduction
Kalamba Games is a small but rapidly growing gambling game developer launched in 2016. With offices in Malta and Krakov, the next generation supplier is positioning itself for a solid place in an ever more competitive marketplace.
Founded by executives with extensive experience in the terrestrial and online gaming industry, the company employs a talented workforce in their labs and remotely.
The co-founders, Steve Cutler and Alex Cohen have the combined experience of nearly two decades with positions such as the head of development at Unibet poker and head of game design at Quickspin prior to that company's acquisition by Playtech. Cohen also worked in game design at IGT where he participated in the development and creation of games like Coyote Moon and Treasures of Troy as well as acting as team leader on other popular IGT machines such as The Hangover, Wheel of Fortune: Triple Extreme Spin, and more.
While the company's goals seemed lofty when they projected a game per month would come out of their labs during 2018 - they seem to be hitting their production target. LCB interviewed the co-founders in early January and the developers offered some interesting insights about their core thinking. A lot can be divined about future games and a company's trajectory by learning about key players' vision and what they consider important.

By August 2018, the company had released ten titles. All were developed and deployed in HTML5 for play on any device. The games can be found at over a dozen casinos. Expect both of these numbers to climb dramatically as time goes on, especially the number of gaming sites carrying the slots. A few current and well-known places included Vera&John, Jackpot Joy, and Cherry. Oryx signed a distribution agreement in May 2017 so the games are also available across Europe and new operations like Frank & Fred and older operators like Quasar Gaming carry the brand.
The games offer multifaceted features. The base or standard games are all well rendered visually and offer sophisticated mathematics behind the scenes. The meta or bonus games vary from title to title. The first three releases, as well as several others, also contain another level of play that can be used for promotions such as contests - Missions.
Some games containing the missions element allow players to collect symbols over time to win prizes. On certain games such as Goldfire 7s, Fire Eagle, and Double Joker players can choose the level of risk or volatility they want in the missions segment with durations from 30 spins up to 100 spins. When the game is played as part of a promotion, players can try to beat others scores. When not part of a promo, players can try to beat their own best scores. Mission accomplishments are stored for later, so they can always go back and pick up where they left off.
Tiger Claws is a highly volatile game with 243 virtual paylines. On a scale of 0-12 in volatility, it clocks in with a "9". More of a roller coaster ride than feast or famine generator, the game has a hit frequency of 34% and RTP of 96.33%.
Rather than using the mission mechanic on this, their fourth game, the developers opted for three personal progressive jackpots. Scattered white tigers trigger a silver, gold, or platinum jackpot. The biggest pot seeds at 1000x bet and increases by 1% x stake with each play.
In addition to the white tiger, there are three other tiger symbols on the reels and these are obviously the important icons. Each tiger has a doppelganger with a 2x symbol which will double wins. Free spins trigger frequently and wilds do double duty as multipliers x2.
Acknowledgments
While a new studio producing one game each month is impressive... the intrinsic quality and depth of game development here is far more notable. Adding personal progressive jackpots to missions is something that would bring me back to another enjoyable and favorite game again and again. Being able to adjust the volatility level of symbol collection is a brilliant idea - especially on games that don't allow users to adjust line count/bet level to manipulate their own of risks and rewards.
