Northern Exposure Trivia
This week, we honor the life of Valerie Mahaffey, who died on May 30, 2025 at the age of 71. She played the roll of Eve in what is probably my favorite television show of all time, Northern Exposure. You may recall I wrote about my love of Northern Exposure in my July 24,2024 newsletter Return to Roslyn, Washington.
Eve was one of my favorite characters on Northern Exposure. She played the hypochondriac wife of Adam. Every scene with Adam and Eve was pure gold. Individually, they were both good characters, but the chemistry between them was one of the reasons the show was as great as it was.
Not that Valerie needs any more points with me, but she gets more by playing the roll of Victoria MacElroy on another one of my favorite shows, Young Sheldon. To celebrate her life, this week I present a Northern Exposure trivia challenge. However, first, as usual, is the weekly logic puzzle.
Logic Puzzle
A girl meets a lion and unicorn in the forest. The lion lies every Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, and the other days, he speaks the truth. The unicorn lies on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, and the other days of the week, he speaks the truth. "Yesterday, I was lying," the lion told the girl. "So was I," said the unicorn. What day is it?

Logic Puzzle Solution
Let’s take this day by day, starting with Monday.
- • Monday: Both statements are false. The lion lies on Mondays so that is expected, but the unicorn speaks the truth. So, it can’t be Monday.
- • Tuesday: The lion’s statement is true and the unicorn’s is false. However, the opposite is expected of both animals. So, it definitely isn’t Tuesday.
- • Wednesday: Same logic as Tuesday.
- • Thursday: The lion’s statement is true and the unicorn’s is false. That is what is expected of both animals on Thursday. So, it would seem to be Thursday, but let’s look at the other three days to be sure.
- • Friday: The lion’s statement is false and the unicorn’s is true. However, the opposite is expected of both animals. So, it definitely isn’t Friday.
- • Saturday: Same logic as Friday.
- • Sunday: The lion’s statement is false and the unicorn’s is true. However, the lion speaks the truth on Sundays. So it can’t be Sunday
The above shows the only possible day it can be is Thursday.
