Dukes of Hazzard Trivia

This week we pay tribute to Rick Hurst, who died on June 26, 2025 at the age of 79. Rick played the role of bumbling sheriff deputy Cletus Hogg on the Dukes of Hazzard. The show ran from 1979 to 1985, which would have made me 14 to 20. At least in the early seasons, I was the perfect age for the show and was a devoted fan. However, I outgrew the show as I went off to college in 1983. I did enjoy the 2005 movie version, which had a similar theme to the Brady Bunch movies in showing how the characters found their place in a changing world.

However, before we get to the trivia challenge, I present my weekly logic puzzle.

Logic Puzzle

You have a balance scale and eight pearls. Seven of the pearls are real and all weigh the same. The one fake pearl weighs differently, either more or less. You may use a balance scale three times to isolate the fake pearl. How do you do it?

Logic Puzzle Answer

  1. Weigh any two pearls on both sides of the balance scale. If it balances, those four pearls can be set in the “real” group and the other four in the “unknown” group. If they don’t balance, do the opposite. Either way, both groups will have four pearls each.
  2. Weigh two pearls from the real group against two from the unknown. If they balance, go to step 3. If they don’t balance, go to step 4.
  3. The fake is one of the two unknown pearls you didn’t weigh in step 2. Weigh one of them against any of six proven real pearls. If they don’t balance, the one you tested is the fake. If they do balance, the remaining unknown pearl is the fake.
  4. At this point, we can separate the four unknown pearls into two that are possible fake and heavy and two that are possibly fake and light, according to which sides went up and down from step 2. Call the possibly fake and light pearls A and B and possibly fake and heavy pearls C and D. For the third weighing, weigh A with C against any two real pearls. If the side with A and C went down, then C is fake. Otherwise, A is the fake.
