Beer Trivia
This week we celebrate beer with a trivia challenge on that topic. No particular reason for this particular date. The topic seems to come up a lot in pub trivia, so I thought it better to study up now than wait for the next National Beer Day. However, as usual, we start with a logic puzzle.
Logic Puzzle
Three women arrive at a hotel and ask for a room. They are informed a room is $30. Each of them chips in $10 for the room. A bellman then helps them with their bags to the room.
Later, the clerk realized there was a $25 promotion going on and he overcharged the women by $5. The clerk gives the bellman five $1 bills to return to the three women. However, the bellman remembers he didn’t get a tip so keeps $2 for himself, returning $3 to the women. He justifies because five $1 bills doesn’t divide evenly by three people anyway.
So, each woman ended up paying $9 for the room, for a total of $27. Plus, the bellman got $2. $27 + $2 = $29. However, they originally paid $30. Where is the missing dollar?

Logic Puzzle Solution
There is no missing dollar.
The way the question is stated is misleading. One should not add together the same money. In this case, the $2 the bellman received was part of the $27 paid for the room, so that $2 is double counted.
A correct way to look at it is to compare money paid to money received.
Money paid was 3 * $9 = $27. Money received was $25 to the clerk and $2 to the bellman. $25 + $2 = $27. So, the transaction balances.
