- Boston Red Sox acquire the contract of 19-year-old Ted Williams.
December 8th, 2008
- Greg Maddux announces his retirement from Major League Baseball after 23 seasons and 355 wins. Maddux pitched for the Chicago Cubs, Atlanta Braves, San Diego Padres, and the Los Angeles Dodgers, and claimed four successive Cy Young Awards from 1992 as best pitcher in the National League.

- American League announces purchase of grounds for a baseball stadium in New York.

- National League votes to ban the spitball's use by all new pitchers.

- Major League Baseball National League President John Heydler proposes designated hitter for pitchers.
