Reason #2 why the Wizard likes Bovada:

No-hassle practice games

Most online casinos spend more effort trying to separate you from your money than they do trying to give you a good experience. They have all kinds of popup windows, they usually make you download their software, and if they do offer play-in-browser games then you have to register an account before you can play. And if you register they start sending you emails trying to get you to deposit real money.

But Bovada is different. They have no popup windows at all, and their practice games play right in your browser, with no download, and no registration required. You don’t even have to give up your email address. It couldn’t be simpler: just one click and you’re playing the game.

I wish all online casinos showed this much respect for their players. Other casinos practically ask for your first born child to play for free. Meanwhile Bovada is patient and does not twist anybody’s arm to play for real money. You can play as long as you like for free with no obligation. The real-money games are available if that’s your preference, but if not, you can play the free practice games for as long as you like without hassle.

Introduction

I have been hearing more and more about casinos in Asia offering insurance bets in baccarat after four or five cards have been dealt. These are generally made to protect a stronger hand against losing, or in the case of a 9, a tie.

To avoid confusion, I capitalize Player when referring to the bet, and use lower case when referring to the person playing the game.

Except as noted, insurance on the Banker hand wins when the Player hand ends up winning, and vise versa.

Exceptions:

  • Insurance on a 9-point hand will win in the event of a tie and lose otherwise.
  • Insurance on the Banker hand on a 0-0 score after five cards will win in the event of a tie and otherwise lose.

All figures in this page are based on an eight-deck game.

Star Cruises

Star Cruises is a cruise line that visits the east Asian countries. Their ships offer baccarat insurance in their casinos. The following is my best interpretation of their rules, based on a company document explaining the rules and procedures of the game. The insurance bet is limited to the amount of the original wager. It is unclear to me when the cards are exposed, but it seems the players have free will in this regard.

Insuring a Natural

If either Player or Banker has a natural 8 or 9, then he may insure it against a tie in the case of a 9 or a loss in the case of an 8.

Insuring a 3-Card Player Hand Against Unknown Banker Hand

The next table covers the situation where the Player has drawn a third card and the Banker has not turned over any cards yet. Insurance is taken on the Player hand and wins in the case of a tie with a Player 9. A Banker win occurs with all other player totals.

Banker Insurance After Four Cards are Exposed

The next table covers the situation where the Player has exposed three cards and the Banker has exposed two. Insurance is offered only on four situations where the totals are equal on the Banker hand. In the 0-0 case, the insurance bet wins in the event of a tie, and all others pay on a Player win.

These rules also came to me in the form of an internal company document, which may be outdated. It states that insuring a Banker 2-card 6 against a Player 2-card 5 pays 3 to 1, which would have a player advantage of 8.44%. I don't know if they still allow this.
