Gambling Mathematics as a Profession

I'm an actuary too. Are you finished with the exams? Do you do consulting on gambling for a living?

It is always nice to hear from fellow actuaries out there. What other field is more qualified for the study of the mathematics of gambling? I finished taking exams when I attained my ASA in June 1995, just before the rule was changed requiring 300 credits. As someone who likes a good math problem I actually enjoyed the challenge of the exams. I have tried to study for the 200 series exams but the material is boring and inapplicable to what I do. Effective April 21, 2000 (Good Friday) I left my position with the Office of the Chief Actuary at the Social Security Administration and am now fully self employed. My income is derived from both consulting and advertising revenue from this web site.

I have a degree in math and would like to follow in your footsteps as a gaming mathematician. Do you have any advice?

For a gaming mathematician I'm an exception. While I'm a self employed consultant, most gaming mathematicians work directly for slot machine companies. Here is a list of some, I would recommend contacting them directly. This would be a good way to get started.

I have a new table game idea. How much would you charge to analyze it and do you help with marketing?

I charge $3,000 to $20,000, depending on how much time the analysis will take. After seeing the rules, I can give you a specific quote. No, I do not help with marketing. If you don't know what you are getting into, please read my section on marketing new games.
